The plastic that replaces metal. In the hardest environments.
PEEK is the top-tier thermoplastic: 100 MPa tensile strength, 260°C continuous service, chemically nearly inert, biocompatible for implants. 15× the price of nylon — for the rare applications where that's justified.

PEEK grades.
PEEK (unfilled)
Victrex 450G / Solvay KT-820. Translucent amber. USP Class VI biocompatible. Implant prototypes, medical instruments, aerospace insulators.
PEEK-CF30
30% carbon fiber reinforced. 2× the stiffness and strength of unfilled PEEK. Load-bearing implants, high-fatigue structural aerospace.
PEEK-GF30
30% glass fiber reinforced. Excellent dimensional stability at elevated temperature. Electrical connectors, semiconductor fixtures.
PEEK-Bearing
PTFE + carbon fiber + graphite modified. Self-lubricating, low wear. Dynamic seals, bushings, bearings running unlubricated.
PEEK-HT
Modified PEEK with elevated Tg (160 °C). Victrex HT series. Under-hood automotive, hot-section aerospace.
PEEK-ESD
Carbon nanotube modified. Surface resistivity 10^8–10^10 Ω. Semiconductor wafer handling, ESD-sensitive electronic fixtures.
The base PEEK polymer is modified with fillers for specific performance. Each filler changes strength, stiffness, wear, friction and cost.
Why pay 15× the price of nylon?
High-temperature service
Continuous service at 260 °C, peaks to 300 °C. Nylon softens at 150 °C. Most thermoplastics decompose before PEEK changes dimension.
Chemical inertness
Resists virtually all common chemicals including concentrated H2SO4 up to 150 °C. Suitable for semiconductor wet-etch fixtures, aggressive chemical pumps.
Biocompatibility
USP Class VI, ISO 10993-1 tested. Long-term implant grade with no corrosion or ion leaching. Standard for spinal fusion cages, dental abutments.
Strength-to-weight
100 MPa tensile in unfilled, 200 MPa in CF30. Approaches aluminum strength at 1/2 the density. Aerospace bracket replacement.
Four distinct use cases justify PEEK's premium. Outside these, cheaper engineering plastics are usually the better choice.

PEEK finishing.
As-machined
Typical Ra 1.6 µm. Single-pass finish without secondary operations for most applications.
Polished
Up to Ra 0.1 µm mirror finish. Critical for implant surfaces to minimize bacterial attachment.
Bead blasted
Uniform matte cosmetic. Standard medical instrument finish.
Laser marked
Permanent alphanumeric marking for serial numbers. Cannot be printed on PEEK (rejects most inks).
Plasma treated
Surface activation for bonding adhesives, improves wettability for coatings.
Sterilization prep
Packaged clean for customer terminal sterilization via gamma, EtO or autoclave.
HA coating
Hydroxyapatite coating on implant grades for bone osseointegration. Through partner.
Pad printed
Works with specialty UV-cure inks. For logos on surgical handles.

The plastic that replaces metal — questions
Can PEEK be machined with standard CNC tools?
Yes, but with attention. Carbide tooling is standard. Sharp positive-rake geometry for unfilled PEEK. For carbon-fiber filled (PEEK-CF30), diamond-coated (PCD) tools extend life 10× — the abrasive carbon fibers otherwise destroy carbide tools quickly. Slow feeds, moderate speeds, flood coolant mandatory.
Is PEEK suitable for implantable medical devices?
Yes, unfilled PEEK is USP Class VI certified and commonly used in long-term implants including spinal fusion cages, dental abutments, and some orthopedic applications. For commercial implantable devices, the final device still requires ISO 10993 biocompatibility testing and regulatory clearance — we supply implant-grade prototype and development parts.
How does PEEK compare to Ultem (PEI)?
PEEK has higher continuous service temperature (260 °C vs 170 °C), better chemical resistance, and better impact strength. Ultem is cheaper (roughly 1/3 the price) and transparent (amber). For mission-critical high-performance applications, PEEK. For aerospace cabin interiors, electrical insulation, and medical parts that don't need PEEK's extreme performance, Ultem is adequate and economic.
Can PEEK be steam autoclaved?
Yes. PEEK withstands repeated 134 °C steam autoclaving cycles without degradation — validated to 2,000+ cycles on surgical instruments. This is a major advantage over most engineering plastics, making it the top choice for autoclavable medical device components.
What is the minimum order for PEEK parts?
Minimum order is 1 piece. However, PEEK stock is expensive (roughly USD 300–500/kg for unfilled Victrex, higher for specialty grades), so single-piece prototypes are usually $200–800 per part depending on size. For pilot runs of 5–20 pieces, per-piece cost drops significantly.
